The short answer

What are vertical blinds?

Vertical blinds are a row of upright vanes that hang from a track. Turn the wand to tilt the vanes for light and privacy, or draw them to the side to open the door or window fully.

They're the classic choice for sliding patio doors and wide windows, because they open sideways instead of lifting. We make them in fabric or PVC (vinyl) vanes.

Best for

  • Sliding patio doors and balcony doors
  • Wide windows and walls of glass
  • Doors you use every day, since they open sideways
  • Tilting the light without opening the blind
  • Kitchens, basements and rentals, with PVC vanes that wipe clean

Not ideal for

  • Full darkness. Some light gets in between and around the vanes, so blackout roller blinds suit a bedroom better.
  • Keeping cold glass warm. Vertical blinds don't insulate the way honeycomb blinds do.
  • Small windows, where a roller or zebra shade looks cleaner.

On a patio door

Made for patio doors

Vertical blinds hang from a track above the door, so they open sideways and never block the handle. We set each one up for the way your door opens.

  • Stack to one side: the vanes gather on the side of the fixed panel, so the sliding side opens clear.
  • Split in the middle: half the vanes stack left and half right, for wide openings and a view in the centre.
  • One wand: turn it to tilt the vanes, and walk it along the track to open and close them. No cords or chains.
  • Mounted above the frame: so the stacked vanes clear the glass, with a valance to hide the track.

Very wide or tall? A motor opens, closes and tilts them at the press of a button.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our vertical blinds.

Are vertical blinds good for sliding patio doors?

Yes, they're one of the most practical choices for a slider. The vanes hang from a track above the door and draw to the side, so the door opens clear. You can also tilt them for light and privacy without opening them at all.

Which side should vertical blinds stack on?

Usually the side of the fixed panel, the half of the door that doesn't slide. That keeps the stacked vanes out of the way when you open the door. We check which way your door opens at the consult and set the stack to suit.

Can vertical blinds open from the middle?

Yes. A split draw sends half the vanes left and half right. It suits wide openings and windows where you want the view in the centre.

Fabric or PVC vertical blinds: which should I choose?

Fabric looks softer, is quieter and comes in more colours and textures, so it suits living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. PVC (vinyl) vanes wipe clean and handle humidity, which suits kitchens, basements, rentals and busy family doors. We bring samples of both to your consult.

Vertical blinds or a roller shade for a patio door?

Vertical blinds open sideways, tilt for light without opening, and cover a very wide door in one blind. A roller or zebra shade rolls up out of sight for a cleaner, modern look, but you raise it to use the door, and a wide door may need two shades. We'll show you both at your consult.

Do vertical blinds block light completely?

No. Closed vanes overlap, but some light still gets in between them and around the edges. For a bedroom that needs to be truly dark, blackout roller blinds do a better job.

Do vertical blinds help with a cold patio door?

A little. Closed vanes take the edge off the chill from the glass, but they don't seal or insulate the way honeycomb blinds do. If the door itself is drafty, new weatherstripping is the real fix.

Are vertical blinds outdated?

Not the way they're made today. Textured fabrics, softer colours and a clean valance look nothing like the old office verticals, and on a wide patio door they're still one of the most practical choices.

Can vertical blinds be motorized?

Yes. A motor opens, closes and tilts them at the press of a button or from an app, which helps most on very wide doors and tall windows. Our motorized blinds page covers motors, controls and power.

Are vertical blinds safe for kids and pets?

Yes. They work with a wand, so there are no dangling cords or loops for children or pets to get caught in.

How do I clean vertical blinds?

Wipe PVC vanes with a damp cloth. Vacuum fabric vanes with a brush attachment, or spot clean them with a damp cloth and mild soap.

How big can vertical blinds be?

We make them up to 192 inches (16 feet) wide and 144 inches (12 feet) tall, so one blind covers most patio doors and walls of windows. For anything bigger, we'll suggest the best layout at your consult.

How much do vertical blinds cost?

Every blind is custom-made, so the price depends on the size, the vanes and fabric you choose, and whether you add a motor. Measuring and installation are included, and you'll get a written quote at your free in-home consult.

What warranty do vertical blinds come with?

Our lifetime warranty covers the blind, with 3 years on fabrics.

Do you install vertical blinds outside Edmonton?

Yes. We install across Edmonton and nearby communities, including Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Fort Saskatchewan and Beaumont.
