The short answer

What are motorized blinds?

Motorized blinds have a small, quiet motor built into the blind, so they move at the press of a button instead of a pull on a cord. Run them from a remote or a wall switch, or add a hub and use an app, a schedule or your voice.

You'll also see them called automated, automatic, electric or remote-control blinds. They're all the same thing.

Best for

  • Tall, wide or hard-to-reach windows
  • Rooms with several windows you want to move together
  • Homes with young kids or pets: no cords at all
  • Anyone who finds cords, chains or wands hard to use
  • Blinds you already like, with a motor added

Not ideal for

  • A small window you adjust once a day. A cordless lift is simpler and costs less.
  • Faux wood blinds, which we make manual only. Most of our other styles, like zebra and roller blinds, can take a motor.

How it works

Blind motors, controls and power

Every motorized blind has a motor, a way to control it and a way to power it. We choose all three for each window at your consult.

  • Motor: Somfy or Ronco, sized to the width and weight of the blind.
  • Control: a remote or wall switch works straight away. Add a small hub for the app, schedules and voice control with smart blinds.
  • Power: a rechargeable battery, a small solar panel, or wiring to your home's power.

Already have blinds you like? In many cases we can add a motor to them instead of replacing them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our motorized blinds.

Are motorized blinds and automated blinds the same thing?

Yes. Motorized, automated, automatic, electric and remote-control blinds all mean blinds that open and close with a motor instead of a cord or chain. Smart blinds are motorized blinds that also connect to your Wi-Fi for app and voice control.

Which blinds can be motorized?

Most of what we make: roller, zebra, blackout, honeycomb, solar, Roman, triple, tri-fold and vertical blinds. We'll suggest the best style for each window at your consult.

Can you add a motor to my existing blinds?

In many cases, yes, especially roller-style blinds. We look at the blind's size, condition and headrail at your consult, then tell you straight whether a motor or a new blind makes more sense.

Which blind motors do you use, Somfy or Ronco?

Both. Somfy is the premium choice, with the widest range of remotes, sensors and smart-home connections. Ronco motors are quiet, reliable and cost less, and suit most standard windows. We'll recommend one for each window.

Battery, solar or hardwired: which should I choose?

A rechargeable battery suits most windows and needs no wiring. Add a small solar panel on sunny windows that are hard to reach, so you rarely charge it. Hardwiring suits large blinds and new builds or renovations, where power can be run to the window.

How long does the battery last?

Most battery motors run 6 to 12 months on a charge, depending on the size of the blind and how often it moves. When it's low, you charge it with a cable, or add a small solar panel so it tops itself up.

Do motorized blinds work in an Edmonton winter?

Yes. The motor sits inside your heated home, so the cold outside doesn't affect it. Solar panels charge less in December's short days, so on north-facing windows we usually suggest charging by cable or hardwiring instead.

Do I need an electrician?

Not for battery or solar motors. A hardwired motor needs power at the window, which is easiest to add during a new build or renovation. We'll tell you exactly what's needed at your consult.

What happens in a power outage?

Battery and solar motors keep working as normal. Hardwired motors stop until the power comes back.

How quiet are motorized blinds?

Quiet enough for a bedroom or nursery. You'll hear a soft hum while the blind moves, then nothing. If quiet matters most, tell us and we'll choose the motor for it.

Can I move several blinds at once?

Yes. One remote or wall switch can move a single blind, a room or a whole wall of windows, and you can set them up in groups.

Can I control motorized blinds with my phone or voice?

Yes. Add a small hub on your Wi-Fi and your motorized blinds work with an app, schedules, and Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home. Our smart blinds page has the details.

Are motorized blinds worth it?

They're worth it most on tall or hard-to-reach windows, large or heavy blinds, and rooms where you'd otherwise open several blinds one by one. For a small window you adjust once a day, a cordless lift does the job for less.

Are motorized blinds safe for kids and pets?

Yes. There are no cords or chains at all, so there's nothing for young children or pets to get caught in.

How much do motorized blinds cost?

Every blind is custom-made, so the price depends on the blind, its size, the motor, how it's powered and how many windows you're doing. Measuring and installation are included, and you'll get a written quote at your free in-home consult.

What warranty do the motors come with?

Somfy motors carry a 5-year manufacturer warranty and Ronco motors 2 years. The blind itself is covered by our lifetime warranty, with 3 years on fabrics.

Do you install motorized blinds outside Edmonton?

Yes. We install across Edmonton and nearby communities, including Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Fort Saskatchewan and Beaumont.
