Blackout Blinds
Total light control
Cellular shades built for Alberta winters
Honeycomb blinds, also called cellular shades, trap a layer of still air between your window and your room, so cold glass stops chilling the space around it. We make every shade to measure in our Edmonton facility and install it ourselves.

Custom honeycomb (cellular) blinds made in our Edmonton facility. Single or double cell, light filtering to blackout, cordless, top-down/bottom-up or motorized. Measured and installed by our own team.
The short answer
Honeycomb blinds are soft fabric shades made from rows of hexagonal cells, like a honeycomb seen from the side. When the shade is down, every cell holds a pocket of still air against the window. Still air is a good insulator, so less of your room's heat reaches the cold glass, and the chill you feel standing near a window in January eases off.
You'll also see them called cellular shades, cellular blinds or honeycomb shades. They're all the same product.
How they work
Each cell holds a pocket of still air between your room and the cold glass, so less heat escapes and the draft you feel near the window in January eases off.
Every honeycomb shade comes in single cell, one layer of air pockets, or double cell, two layers for more insulation. Fit matters as much as fabric: a shade made for your exact window leaves no wide gaps at the sides, which is why we measure and install every one ourselves.

Natural Resources Canada estimates that windows, doors and skylights can account for up to 35% of a home's heat loss, and notes that blinds help reduce it during the heating season.

Common questions about our honeycomb blinds.
Yes. Honeycomb blinds, honeycomb shades, cellular shades and cellular blinds are all names for the same product: a fabric shade made of hexagonal cells that trap air against the window.
For most Edmonton homes, yes, especially on north-facing windows, large windows and bedrooms. Our heating season runs roughly October to April, and honeycomb shades insulate better than any other blind we make. Natural Resources Canada estimates that windows, doors and skylights can account for up to 35% of a home's heat loss, so covering them well matters. Your own results depend on your windows, the fit and how often the shades are closed.
Single-cell shades have one layer of air pockets. Double-cell shades have two, so they hold more air, insulate more and soften outside noise a little more. We usually recommend double cell for north-facing and large windows, and single cell where heat loss matters less or a slimmer stack matters more.
Light filtering softens daylight and gives daytime privacy, and the room stays bright. Room darkening blocks most of the light for a dim room, good for TV rooms and guest rooms. Blackout blocks light through the fabric, for bedrooms and nurseries. We bring samples of all three to your consult so you can see them in your own light.
Yes. Blackout honeycomb fabric blocks light through the fabric. A little light can still show around the edges of a shade mounted inside the window frame, so for a truly dark room we'll talk through mounting options or recommend our blackout blinds.
Close them at dusk: a shade only insulates when it's down, and winter nights are when windows lose the most heat. Open south-facing shades on sunny days so the sun can warm the room. A motor on a sunset schedule does both for you. In summer, with about 17 hours of daylight in June, the same shades slow the heat coming in through south- and west-facing glass.
A well-fitted shade keeps warm room air away from the glass, so the glass gets colder. If indoor humidity is high, moisture in the air can condense or freeze on it. Opening the shades for part of the day and keeping humidity in check usually solves it. Mention it at your consult and we'll take it into account.
In bathrooms, yes. We use moisture-resistant honeycomb fabric made for humid rooms. For a window right beside a shower or over a stove, a wipe-clean roller shade is often easier to live with, and we'll tell you if we think so.
Top-down/bottom-up honeycomb shades can be adjusted from both the top and the bottom independently. Lower the top for light while keeping the bottom closed for privacy, or raise the bottom for a full view. It gives you complete flexibility over light and privacy in any room.
Yes. We offer motorized honeycomb shades with Somfy and Ronco motors. They work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit, and can open and close on a schedule, for example closing every shade at sunset in winter.
Choose cordless lift or a motor and there are no cords to reach. Both are available on our honeycomb shades.
Every shade is custom-made, so the price depends on the window size, cell type, fabric, lift and mounting. Measuring and installation are included, and you'll get a written quote at your free in-home consult.
Every honeycomb shade is covered by our lifetime warranty, with 3 years on fabrics. We'll walk you through exactly what's covered for the options you choose.
Dust them with a vacuum brush on low suction, or blow dust out of the cells with a hair dryer on the cool setting. Dab marks gently with a damp cloth and don't soak the fabric.
Yes. We install across Edmonton and nearby communities, including Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Fort Saskatchewan and Beaumont.
